  1. 1859-1940. British Labour politician, leader
  2. in the Commons 1931-35. In 1921, while mayor
  3. of the London borough of Poplar, he went to
  4. prison with most of the council rather than
  5. modify their policy of more generous
  6. unemployment relief. He was a member of
  7. Parliament 1910-12 and 1922-40; he was leader
  8. of the parliamentary Labour party 1931-35,
  9. but resigned (as a pacifist) in opposition to
  10. the party's militant response to the Italian
  11. invasion of Abyssinia (present-day Ethiopia).
  12. He was editor of the Daily Herald 1912,
  13. carried it on as a weekly through World War
  14. I, and again as a daily until 1922.
